Organized collaboratively by the Katonah Museum of Art and The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, the exhibition celebrates the 10th anniversary of our Learning Center and the 5th anniversary of the Eric Carle Museum. This exhibition explores the theme of the changing image of the child. Children Should Be Seen is the first exhibition on the theme of the image of the child in contemporary picture-book art ever to be presented in the United States or, to the curators knowledge, anywhere in the world. The core of the exhibition consists of artworks dating from 1997 to 2007, and is grouped by the following sub-themes with the aim of highlighting American picture book artists interpretations of six of childhoods formative stages and experiences: The New Child; The Child and Family; The Child At School and At Play; The Child In the Community; The Child In History; The Questioning Child; and The New Picture Book. Children Should Be Seen will appeal to a wide audience and has been planned to be of interest to adults and children alike. Horizons: Sculpture Installation by Steinunn Thrarinsdttir In the Marilyn M. Simpson Sculpture Garden, July 1, 2007 through April 27, 2008 Icelandic artist Steinunn Thrarinsdttir has created an installation, Horizons, which consists of 10 randomly placed figures standing amid the majestic grove of 100-year-old Norwegian spruce trees that shade the Museums sculpture garden. Made of cast iron, each lean, life-size figure is embedded with horizontal lines of glass allowing daylight to shine through. The rough, earth-colored iron relates to the texture and tone of the tree bark. As visitors walk around the garden, figures will appear and disappear from behind the trees. Steinunn has been working professionally for over 20 years and has exhibited widely in Europe, Japan, the USA and Australia. "My work is figurative and has throughout my career fundamentally been about the way we travel through life and relate to our environment and nature," said Steinunn. She has done numerous commissions both for specific indoor spaces as well as outdoor works and monuments. Her works are in numerous private and public collections in Iceland, Italy, USA, Sweden, Denmark and the United Kingdom such as The Royal Caribbean, Hall Financial Group in Texas, Cathryn Hall Wineards in Napa Valley, California and the private collection of Lord and Lady Rocco Forte in England. Star Illustrators: Ten Years on Parade In the Learning Center During its 10- year history, the Learning Center has shown the original art of the very best picture-book illustrators. Our current exhibition celebrates the artists we have exhibited in the past with a parade of delightful book covers beginning with Eric Carle, whose work initiated the Learning Center in 1997. Other prominent picture-book artists included are Jim Jinkins, Stephen T. Johnson, David Kirk, Robert Andrew Parker, Jerry and Brian Pinkney, and Peter Ss. Many internationally known artists have also occasionally lent their talents to illustrating books for children. Among those who have been shown and are included in the exhibition are Red Grooms, Keith Haring, Edward Koren, Sol Lewitt, William Wegman, and Malcah Zeldis. Events Open Books Collaboration Children Should Be Seen is presented during the 10th anniversary celebration of the Katonah Museum of Arts Learning Center and the 5th anniversary of The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. Children Should Be Seen also coincides with the exhibition Building Books: The Art of David Macaulay at the Hudson River Museum and has created an opportunity for several area cultural organizations to collaborate on programming around the theme of Open Books. This collaboration, which is being generously sponsored by a grant from Target, provides the public with many opportunities to consider the art of childrens book illustrations and literature from many perspectives; to view original art by some of the most important childrens book illustrators working today and to experience an in-depth look at the work of one artist in particular David Macaulay; to enjoy films based on popular childrens books; to see original art work from favorite authors and discover the work of less familiar artists; and to engage in a summer of rich reading. In addition to the exhibitions at the Katonah and Hudson River Museums, the Westchester Arts Council is presenting the exhibition Seeing Stories: How Picture Book Artists Imagine (information at HYPERLINK "http://www.westarts.com" www.westarts.com); the Westchester Library System will offer a summer program Get a Clue@ Your Library (information at HYPERLINK "http://www.westchesterlibraries.org" \o "http://www.westchesterlibraries.org" www.westchesterlibraries.org); and the Jacob Burns Fillm Center will feature a series of films adapted from childrens books (information at HYPERLINK "http://www.burnsfilmcenter.org/" \o "http://www.burnsfilmcenter.org/" www.burnsfilmcenter.org). To celebrate this collaboration, each of the participating organizations will offer visitors a pass that will entitle them to free admission or a member discount at each of the other locations. UPCOMING Shattering Glass: New Perspectives November 4, 2007 February 24, 2008 Shattering Glass: New Perspectives will shatter visitors expectations of glass: what it is, what it looks like, how it functions, and its perceived limitations of scale, texture, and malleability. Artists today have pushed the boundaries of the medium so that glass can comprise giant installations meant to be entered and experienced, it can resemble other materials, such as bone, clay, leather, stone, or wood, and it can be used in the high-tech service of neon and fiber optic art.
