Artist Doug Beube, from our current exhibition, provided the inspiration for this fall’s book selection, Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino. Written as a succession of dialogues and meditative conversations between the aged Tartar emperor Kublai Khan and the young Venetian traveler Marco Polo, the novel is surrealistic in tone and structure. As Khan senses the coming demise of his empire, Polo regales him with tales of the cities he has visited. These are no ordinary places, however. The novel highlights cities and memory, cities and desire, cities and designs, hidden cities, and a host of other fantastical urban centers. Calvino’s superb storytelling gifts earned him international renown as “one of the world’s best fabulists” (John Gardner, New York Times Book Review).
Copies of the book are available at the Katonah Village Library.
