In her debut novel, The Dissident, award-winning short-story writer Nell Fruedenberger weaves together the lives of a dissident Chinese artist who relocates to California and the wealthy American family who host him. Inspired by Chinese experimental art of the early nineties, Freudenberger builds a story broadly based on members of the Beijing “East Village” artistic community. As the story cuts back and forth between Beverly Hills and Beijing, readers gain insight about culture, identity, and the value of art in two very different worlds.
