From Marble to Vaseline: Sculptors and their Materials In this series, art historian Marcy B. Freedman examines masterpieces of western sculpture from the standpoint of the materials used in their creation. In addition to discussing the technical skills required to work with various media, Freedman explores some of the broader cultural implications of an artist’s decision to work with a particular sculptural medium.

Tuesday, April 13
Fire and Earth: The Art of Building

Freedman considers sculptural mediums that call for an additive, rather than subtractive, approach. She will discuss the complex processes used in casting while highlighting bronze masterpieces by Ghiberti, Donatello, and Rodin. Her examination of modern sculpture includes the welded steel works of David Smith and Richard Serra, as well as the ceramic work of Viola Frey, Peter Voulkos, and Robert Arneson.
