From Marble to Vaseline: Sculptors and their Materials In this series, art historian Marcy B. Freedman examines masterpieces of western sculpture from the standpoint of the materials used in their creation. In addition to discussing the technical skills required to work with various media, Freedman explores some of the broader cultural implications of an artist’s decision to work with a particular sculptural medium.

Sticks and Stones: The Art of Cutting

Freedman introduces the tools and techniques traditionally associated with wood and stone carving. After considering the accomplishments of Greek and Roman sculptors and medieval craftsmen, she will focus on the carved masterpieces of Michelangelo, Bernini, and the modern sculptors Brancusi, Noguchi, and Bourgeois.

$60 members, $75 non-members for the series; $25 per lecture, $10 students
