From Marble to Vaseline: Sculptors and their Materials In this series, art historian Marcy B. Freedman examines masterpieces of western sculpture from the standpoint of the materials used in their creation. In addition to discussing the technical skills required to work with various media, Freedman explores some of the broader cultural implications of an artist’s decision to work with a particular sculptural medium.

Anything Goes! The Art of Today

Freedman discusses the accomplishments of the Constructivists and the Surrealists, as well as other 20th-century sculptors who used new industrial, commercial, and synthetic products in their work. She examines the achievements of the earth artists and such post-modernists as Robert Smithson, Eve Hesse, Anish Kapoor, and Matthew Barney.

Prepaid reservations required.
$60 members, $75 non-members for the series; $25 per lecture, $10 students
