Self-Portraits from the Renaissance to the Present

In a series of three one-hour presentations, artist and art historian Marcy B. Freedman surveys the art of self-portraiture from the 15th century to the present. Her close examination of self-portraits reveals insights into the personality of the artists as well as their technical and stylistic preferences. Freedman uses these artworks to illustrate how the role of the artist in Western society has changed over the centuries.

May 19: The Outsider as Superstar
At the beginning of the 20th century, an artist – even a successful one – might be content to exist within the narrow confines of the art world. Everything changed, however, when Andy Warhol became a media star and a household name. In her final lecture, Freedman considers the self-portraits of Picasso, Duchamp, Warhol, Koons, Barney, Sherman, and others.
